Real Madrid - Pachuca Intercontinental Final 2024 Technical Sheet
Real Madrid was crowned Intercontinental Cup champion after defeating Pachuca in the grand final by 3-0.
Carlo Ancelotti, as usual for the Italian, did not make any experiments in his starting eleven for the Intercontinental Cup final against Pachuca, aligning his main stars. Mbappé, Vinicius, and Rodrygo led the attack, accompanied by Camavinga and Tchouameni in midfield. A formation expected for a match of great importance, considered the culmination of international titles.
The match started with a restrained pace. Pachuca opted for high pressure to disrupt the ball distribution of the white team, a strategy that led to errors in the build-up from the back, a situation that visibly discomforted Ancelotti. In fact, the first warning of the match came from the Mexican side: Rodríguez forced Courtois to intervene with a spectacular stretch after a dangerous shot.
Tension in the white team's dugout
The tension in the technical area of Real Madrid was evident. Ancelotti did not hide his discontent and reprimanded Rodrygo for defensive coverage mistakes on his flank. Meanwhile, the white team relied on individual flashes to create danger, with isolated plays from Mbappé and Vinicius, and creative passes from Bellingham. However, the team failed to establish sustained dominance.

The dynamics changed with a magnificent collective play. A precise pass from Bellingham into space enabled Vinicius, who, after beating the rival goalkeeper, assisted Mbappé to finish with his left foot and make it 1-0. Although his performance had been discreet until then, the individual skills of Madrid made the difference, demonstrating the team's ability to be lethal in the penalty areas.
Rodrygo extends the lead with a spectacular goal

The start of the second half was overwhelming for Real Madrid. Just seven minutes in, Rodrygo produced a brilliant individual play: with two cuts that left the rival defense out of action, he finished with a curved shot impossible for the goalkeeper. Although VAR reviewed Bellingham's position for possible interference, the referee validated the goal after considering there was no influence on the play.
Despite the lead, Madrid opted for a more conservative management of the tempo. This allowed Pachuca to dangerously approach, forcing Courtois to intervene with a great save against a header from Rondón that could have narrowed the gap.
Vinicius seals it from the penalty spot

The game concluded with a penalty awarded thanks to VAR intervention, after a foul on Lucas Vázquez. Vinicius assumed responsibility from the spot and sealed the deal with a powerful and crossed shot. Although Moreno managed to deflect the ball, it ended up in the back of the net, establishing the definitive 3-0.
