We often say that time flies. But not for Gavi. At least, not in the last year. The Barça midfielder has gone through a long and complicated tunnel since he suffered a serious injury to his right knee in November 2023. This Saturday, 369 days after that unfortunate episode, the blaugrana is ready to fully regain his smile: the intention is for Gavi to start against Celta.

Hansi Flick has taken advantage of these days with less activity to reflect on a decision that is part of a clearly defined plan. So far, Gavi has played brief periods in matches this season. This first phase of his return had as its main objective to regain sensations and gradually reintegrate into the competitive dynamic. In fact, in five of those six matches, the midfielder played less than 10 minutes. Only against Red Star did he play 22 minutes.

Now, his start at Balaídos will mark the beginning of a new stage. His minutes on the field will begin to increase significantly, although still with the necessary caution to avoid overloading in these first months. In other words, being a starter against Celta does not imply that the medical and technical staff consider him ready to play at the highest level every three days. A gradual approach will be maintained to minimize risks.

Of course, Gavi is still not ready to play a full match. It is expected that Flick will decide to substitute him, at most, shortly after the start of the second half.
